Are you Called to be an Intercession?
Are You an Intercessor?
So I want to talk about the types of intercessors and what they do because some people know they are called to be intercessors and they are in a place where they are encouraged and trained but SOME people don’t know they are called and they just go from one interesting experience to another never knowing why or what they are supposed to do.
Kind of like what happened to me when I started having all kinds of prophetic experiences without realizing that it was a call and anointing that I had. Now I want to say here real quickly in regards to prophets- because I get this from a lot of people,
“Oh Mignon, I am not an intercessor, I am a prophet.” As if being an intercessor was somehow beneath them.
Let me make this clear: EVERY PROPHET IS CALLED TO BE AN INTERCESSOR- that is a major part of your job and calling- EVERY Prophet is called to be an intercessor though not every intercessor is called to be a prophet.
Here are some scriptural references for what I just said:
Ezekiel 13:4-6 (Amplified Bible)
4 O Israel, your prophets have been like foxes among ruins and in waste places.
5 You have not gone up into the gaps or breeches, nor built up the wall for the house of Israel that it might stand in the battle in the day of the Lord.
6 They have seen falsehood and lying divination, saying, The Lord says; but the Lord has not sent them. Yet they have hoped and made men to hope for the confirmation of their word.
Ezekiel 22:29-31 (Amplified Bible)
29 The people of the land have used oppression and extortion and have committed robbery; yes, they have wronged and vexed the poor and needy; yes, they have oppressed the stranger and temporary resident wrongfully.
30 And I sought a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.
31 Therefore have I poured out My indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their own way have I repaid [by bringing it] upon their own heads, says the Lord God.
So, prophets listen up, you are intercessors and intercession is a part of your job just as much as prophesying is.
CHARACTERISTICS OF AN INTERCESSOR:
Intercessors are the Warriors of the kingdom. They are the ones who know how to access heaven and get things done on the Earth through their prayers. They actually under-gird the work of heaven, helping to birth the plans and purposes of God upon the Earth by praying, agreeing, acting and decreeing God’s specific heart and will.
Not all Intercessors are alike; their gifting differs just as much as other spiritual gifts differ among those who have them. Not all healers heal the same way, not all prophets are the same and not all intercessors pray exactly alike. As you read through the following list of basic characteristics and common traits keep in mind that Intercessors are unique individuals whose giftings can vary from one type to another.
Typically have an incredible all consuming passion and interest for God. They are very passionate people about the things of God and their walk with God. They are the people who are like “let’s pray” when everyone else wants to go to the movies. They are the ones who are always asking what would God do or want in a given situation. God is involved in every aspect of their lives and they typically bring him into every aspect of their daily lives.
Are obedient people when it comes to the things of God. They will go above and beyond the call when they are charged with a task to do for the King. Radically obedient- their mandate is usually I am here Lord what would you have me do-I am reporting for duty.
Are people filled with great faith in God and His plans and purposes. Many also have the gift of faith and a humble spirit- they typically do their work for God out of the spotlight.
Love the presence of God and the authority and centrality of His word. Many are able to spend great amounts of time alone with God- getting alone in their prayer closets for several hours at a time. They have a great reverence for God’s glory and are sensitive to when His presence arrives.
True intercessors are people who are good at keeping God’s secrets. They are trustworthy with the things of God and they never use the information that God reveals to them for personal gain or against others.
These are just some basic characteristics or traits that are common to intercessors. Now intercessors don’t just pray, they can have other Spiritual Gifts and do other types of work like healing and deliverance BUT prayer is usually their top priority.
COMMON TYPES OF INTERCESSORS:
Intercessors come in all shapes and sizes. They can be any age and any gender, but you will typically, in this current day, find more women than men doing the work of intercession.
Now there are also different types of Intercessors. This is also not a comprehensive list and many intercessors can be more than juts one type but this list is to give you a basic idea of some common types.
There are warrior intercessors. These are people who are typically involved in high-level spiritual warfare. They battle with the Lord and his host against His enemies and are familiar with demonic hierarchies and how things work in the spirit realm.
There are burden-bearing intercessors that actually carry out and pray the work of the Lord through their bodies. A good example of this was when Elijah was praying for it to rain and he got down in the birthing position Seven times before the rain cloud formed. This can also go along with travailing prayer, which is also a common type of praying that intercessors do.
There are Ezekiel type intercessors that pray out what they see and act out specific prophetic acts as part of their intercession. There are Jeremiah type intercessors that weep out what they are given in intercession. There are intercessors that intercede through Dance and worship and many more types of intercessors.
It is also common that an intercessor can start out at one level of intercession and over their lives moves up several levels in regards to their assignments, authority and influence.
AUTHORITY & SPHERE OF INFLUENCE
Intercessors typically have a specific zone or sphere of authority and influence in which they have dominion. This has to do with their particular calling and the assignments the Lord has given them.
There are intercessors whose sphere of authority extends to their church and over their particular prayer groups. There are intercessors that pray and have authority over different cities. There are some whose authority extends over larger territories and even regions of countries.
There are some intercessors that are assigned to people like pastors, leaders of states, industries and/or foreign nations.
All intercessors have a common purpose to birth the works of God and the kingdom in their different areas through different methods.
TYPE OF PRAYER INTERCESSORS DO:
Now it is up to the individual intercessor to decide what type of prayer they are going to be doing in their times of intercession with God. It could be one type of prayer or several different types of prayer all weaving in and out of the prayer time. The following are just a few of the ways intercessors carry out the prayer work of God.
First and foremost Intercessors stand in the gap between man and God and pray on man’s behalf. They seek always to reconcile, people, places, events, nations, etc with God and His plans and purposes. Now they do this standing in the gap in different ways and please note that the following is not a comprehensive list.
Intercessors prayerfully agree here on earth with the plans of God. This means that when God shows them what He is or rather what He wants to, they pray in agreement with His will. Remember that Jesus left His authority upon the earth with the church. He also left us with the ministry of reconciliation. God is always looking to reconcile people, situations, events, countries etc. So because we are the ministers of reconciliation and we are the ones who carry Christ’s authority, He often will reveal what he wants to do to the intercessor so that the intercessor can AGREE with God and open the way for the reconciliation of whatever kind to come forth. Remember Ezekiel 22:30
And I sought a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.
God wanted someone to agree with him to NOT destroy the land but he found no one. SO agreeing with God for his plans and purposes to come forth is one type of prayer intercessors do.
Intercessors can decree out the will plans and purposes of God. This is where they verbally speak forth God’s purposes. Often this will go hand in hand with some type of prophetic act that brings release of the work of God.
Prophetic acts are a type of intercession that is really like prayers acted out in the natural. They are usually associated with what God is doing in the heavens and can range from things like stomping your feet upon the ground because the Lord is stamping out evil in a certain region to blowing kazoos to help clear out an open heaven.
Another type of Intercessory Prayer is repentance and standing in identification repentance on behalf of those they are interceding for. This is often done by intercessors during their prayer time.
Travailing is also a type of prayer work done by intercessors. This is more like a birthing type of prayer where the intercessor is actually praying in BODY and Spirit and there are manifestations in their body that correspond with what God is doing in the heavens. This is a major type of breakthrough intercession.
If you have never travailed before it is rather hard to describe what it is like and exactly what is going – it is similar to burden bearing but it is different in that it usually brings breakthrough and doesn’t last as long. It can include weeping, moaning, shaking, sobbing, actually a whole host of manifestations. It is praying strongly in the spirit and it affects our physical bodies beyond the reasoning of our minds.
Some intercessors that go through travail don’t always know the immediate reason for it but the reason is often revealed after the travailing time of intercession has ended.
Fasting is also a way intercessors will do the work of the Lord be it fasting from food or sleep-that time is devoted to prayer on their assignments and following the Lord.
Some Intercessors who have high level of authority and large sphere of influence do engage in spiritual warfare praying at the leading of the Lord and they do work with angels in that warfare.
Central to EVERY Intercessor is Worship because worship is the highest form of warfare that an intercessor can do and is central to most of their activities. So agreeing, decreeing, prophetic acts, travailing, warfare all of these are just a few ways that intercessors pray during their times with the Lord.
God is looking for people who will make themselves available and just say “YES” to taking time to pray for His desires. Maybe YOU are just the person He is looking for!
